This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember going into your classroom on the first day of school and seeing a beautiful reading center with a nice bright rug and lots of books on nice shelves? My students do not have that yet. Please help make our reading center engaging and motivating!

I have a third grade class.

Half are special education and and the other half are general education. The students attend a low income school that has recently lost a good amount of funding. Many of them come from high poverty backgrounds. The school is located in an urban area of New York. They are wonderful children who need that extra push to gain the motivation to learn. They all have great potential to succeed and it is my hope to do all that I can to help them reach all of their goals. The school lost all academic-based after-school programs so the students need all of the attention possible during the school day because most of the parents cannot afford to pay for tutoring.

My Project

My students need a nice, clean rug, to read on and to enjoy read alouds, and a wipeboard/chart paper stand. The rug will motivate children to want to come and do silent reading. It will encourage them to read for enjoyment. I also do many of my writing lessons on the carpet, so the students will have a clean bright spot to sit on in order to participate fully in lessons. The wipeboard/chart stand is interactive, so the students will be able to come up and participate in group writing activities. As the year goes on, the students will also need grade-level, appropriate chapter books. When the children see books that they like such as "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", Cam Jansen", etc., it motivates them to read for enjoyment.

This project is so important to me because I want my students to enjoy learning and reading.

I want them to be motivated, and new materials are a great way to get students excited to learn and read. Please help my class build a wonderful, bright, and exciting reading center.
