This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what is was like to be in a classroom and listen to topics that you had no connection to? To make connections and inspire these students to learn I started a "classroom in nature" so the students get out into nature and explore the topics in science, math, English and history.
Our students come from a NYC school that is one of the most culturally diverse in the country!
Most are economically depressed and have problems getting the most basic supplies needed for school. They are eager to explore and become interested in the world once they are introduced to it in an unique way!
My Project
I have led groups of students into the woods just north of NYC to give them real world experience with the topics they are covering in school. They are so eager and become extremely connected to the topics. The problem lies in the lack of equipment for these trips. Hydration containers are the first on the list always since food and water are the essentials. I have had students come with nothing but the cloths on the backs but so excited to be part of the "classroom in nature" group.
To get these students out and connecting with the topics of study is the goal of every educator.
To hear the students come back and relaying what they learned to other students in an excited way is amazing. My goal is for all the students to be prepared, thus the plea for the equipment, and to become lifetime learners.
