They care for classmates, school, our world, and learning. My third graders learn to stick their neck out stretching their mind with new learning with a strong Growth Mindset that they’ll persist and persevere until the “not yet” becomes the “I did it”. They love to look out for friends and work together collaborating on projects. Like a giraffe uses it’s prehensile tongue to grab their favorite foods, my students use their prehensile thumb to grow food in the garden for others!
My Project
For a number of years, I have wondered if a high quality HEPA air filter will help students and myself remain in school when seasonal allergies flare up. Another teacher had a HEPA air filter in her second grade classroom and noticed she suffered fewer sinus headaches. Now, with COVID 19, I think this is one more way I can help create a safer environment for my students and myself. So, we can be in school learning not home fighting allergies or other illnesses.
Last year, a parent of mine suffered allergies every time she came into the school.
While discussing this, she mentioned she wondered if having an air purifier in the class could help this. She noted she has this air filter at work and another at home and does not notice the allergy symptoms in those places like she did while at school. This is the filter she recommended.
An additional note, my husband is a cancer survivor. So, I would like to remain healthy and not risk bringing home germs to him. I would also like to lower the risk of my students possibly taking germs home to their families, too.
Lastly, my third graders learn about mental and physical health. We can discuss the benefits of the air filter helping our bodies filters to protect our lungs like the vegetables we grow in our school garden protect us with vital nutrients.
