This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our 4th grade classroom needs challenging stories to read. My students are 4th graders. Some are English speakers and some are English language learners who have mastered the available material. My students need new material to read that offers heroic characters, themes of overcoming adversity, and texts that will introduce new vocabulary.

Students need a reading challenge to build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and enjoyment.

Reading books that are too simple will get boring. Academic struggle can benefit students. Students can learn to become active readers. Active reading needs thinking, reasoning, predicting, recall, story prediction, and questioning.

This project is for various reading group levels in class. The books include Ruby Bridges, classical Greek mythology, The Olympian series, The Lord of the Rings series, The Hobbit, Chocolate Fever, and Winn-Dixie. I will use these books to create guided reading groups based on fluency levels and provide a challenge in reading, questioning, and discussion to promote active reading habit skills. I will use these books, if I get them in May, or use the books for guided reading in the new school year. The stories and movies have been streamed online on HBO and on Disney. The students are familiar with these characters in either English or Spanish. The students have never read the original stories. Students usually find the story more entertaining, engaging, and better than the film. I plan to implement guided reading excitement by using familiar films and characters to change the students' mindset about reading.
