Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in the highest crime-ridden neighborhood in New York. However, that's not who my students are! My students are bright eyed middle schoolers who want to learn! They want to get better at reading and writing, and are willing to put in the work!
Although they are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, on average, my students read, at minimum, two grades below their grade level.
How does this happen? The majority of my students, unfortunately, do not have the financial means to purchase books to read in their homes. Furthermore, they do not have anyone to take them to the library on a consistent basis. Therefore, over the years, they've slowly fallen behind in their reading levels. Despite being behind, they are willing and eager to work hard and get back on their appropriate reading level.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with the English language for a variety of reasons. The materials in this cart such as the headphones and language board games will be used to develop their English acquisition skills! The stools will be used in our "Expert Corner," meaning, when students are struggling with a certain topic, they will be pulled aside to the expert table and be given extra help by a classmate or a teacher.
I'm most excited about the books because the books I found have characters of color going on everyday adventures!
It is extremely important for all students to see themselves in whatever materials with which they are engaging!
