This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach unique learners who have autism and special needs. Each student has a skill that is tapped by meeting an unrelated sensory need. Items like weighted blankets or stuffed animals can feel like a hug or help calm. Velcro and laminator sheets are used for visual supports within the classroom, which are used by all classroom students. Items like smaller handheld fidgets can offer a learner an opportunity to direct hyperactive energy without disrupting instruction. Teaching social situations and emotions to students with autism is an everyday part of instruction and learning.
