This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
100% of our students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. My students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American experience". However, they face many obstacles and unfamiliar stressors in adjusting to their new lives here. Most are the primary translators for their families, many are child-care providers to younger siblings, and many must work almost full-time to support their families' economic needs. They are also dedicated to their education and see collaboration, team building, and communication as pillars for their success in the U.S. Many are the only English-speaker in their household and must juggle school with a myriad of family responsibilities throughout the day. They need our extra support now more than ever. COVID has been particularly brutal on my students' access to tailored and conscientious curriculum. Our students are so excited to return to school in-person, as they value time spent together to share ideas, empathy, support and kindness in a safe and creative space.
My Project
My students are now entering the second part of the 2021-22 school year (after more than a year of learning remotely from home). My priority is to provide them with an array of collaborative, interactive (and fun) projects that foster further social and emotional learning. This coming Spring in our Health Education classroom we will be making short films about relationships and communication, and completing an in-depth unit on sexual assault prevention, consent, and staying safe and healthy in relationships. The materials I ask for in this proposal each play a central role to enable us to access the visual arts projects and day-to-day learning - not only from now until the end of June 2022. The craft materials will be used by both my health classes and the UNITY Club, our school's growing Gender & Sexuality Alliance. The technology equipment will be used for years to come to assist all tudents in creating audio and video projects that demonstrate their learning, and that can be presented and shared with all students and families across our school community.
