Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 5th graders are becoming more and more independent and love opportunities for autonomy and self sufficiency. Students have classroom jobs, and this year, I'd like to help them gain more autonomy and financial literacy through a classroom economy. Students will get paid for their jobs, and receive payment via their checkbook registers.

Financial Literacy will help my students earn the value of a dollar, and prepare them for the future.

Every two months students will use their math skills to total the amount they've earned. I will then pay them in using the Learning Journey Kids Bank. Students will use the "cash" to purchase items from the store. Students will also act as cashiers, and next semester, we will introduce taxes!

My students are more than motivated to learn. This year's class is especially eager to gain knowledge and I aim to push them as far as they can go. It is never too early to learn about financial literacy!
