Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classroom has a very unique classroom management system! We have established an economy in our room. Students have jobs that they have gone through an application process to acquire and get paid weekly for said job. Students are also able to earn bonuses through participation, being kind, remaining on task, etc.

But, they are also fined for not following these expectations.

Just like many of us (including their own families), they experience paying rent at the beginning of each month and going into debt if they are unable to pay. Students and families have access to their "bank accounts" and are able to monitor the transactions (fines, bonuses, salaries).

This has introduced financial literacy at a young age and has been a great experience for many of our students. In order to give them tangible rewards and not just "money", a classroom store is hosted each Friday for students to use their money to buy things. This has also taught students the value of saving and the understanding that they do not have to buy items for the sake of buying them. Students can see the benefits of working hard and are rewarded for it, and have the ability to choose how they are rewarded.

Our systems has promoted independence, dedication to learning, and involvement in our classroom community. Because these are actual items that they can purchase, as a teacher funding these items, it begins to add up. These items keep our store functioning and students seeing items of interest in their store that motivate them to continue to earn money and work hard.
