Classroom Easels Make Things Easel-er

Help me give my students a classroom easel to collaborate and engage in their learning.

My Project

My classroom is full of wonder and discovery that is supplied by my first-grade students. All of them are full of ideas and are eager to tell their story. The majority of them come from low-income homes, with limited access to resources outside the classroom. These students are ethnically diverse, and all have a story to tell. All of my scholars are building their confidence in reading, writing, and sharing their own personal stories. All 25 of my students are ready to jump into new experiences and build their knowledge.

My goal is to build a classroom that is rich in conversation, collaboration, and community.

From a morning message that greets my students when they walk in the door, to shared readings, poems, songs, and math talks, a new easel will allow all of my students to engage equally with new academic content. This easel is mobile and will allow me to hang chart paper and pocket charts, as well as write messages. With a new easel, my students will be able to come up and share their ideas, discover new information, and add on or ask questions of their classmates. Over time, they will be able to pass the pen to one another and take charge of their own independent learning.

This project will have a lasting impact on my students' identities as learners.

When they are able to read, write, and share their own ideas, they will actively grow into their own scholarly identities. With this easel, I will be able to develop lessons that are engaging and relevant to my students. The materials and curriculum will become a part of our shared space, in which each child can construct his/her own knowledge through actively participating and creating new meanings.
