Classroom Creepy Crawlies For Kindergarteners!

My Students

I love teaching young children about insects and how they are important in our environment.

My school is in central Florida.

It is an elementary school that is kindergarten through grade five. We are a Title 1 school with about 86% of our children qualifying for free and reduced lunches. Our school has a high population of children that come from difficult homes. The teachers and staff work very hard with our children to make sure they have the things they need to be successful in school. This class is very active and talkative. A lot of the children in my class are siblings of children that I have taught through the years or related to other former students. It is very nice to be in a school where you know the families.

My Project

My students will use the insects in the science center for observation and to learn about life cycles. Most have not observed insects up close or watched their habits. The painted lady caterpillars will mesmerize the children as they begin to spin their chrysalis and then the day they hatch, the children will pull up chairs and watch the whole process. When we release the butterflies, I know I will hear the children calling goodbye to them. The ants will dig tunnels in their see through habitat, the ladybugs will charm the children with their colorful wings, and the children will wonder why the brown packing peanuts are in the net cage. One day the packing peanut "pops" and over a hundred little praying mantis will hatch. It is amazing. My excitement will make the children more excited.

Insects have a very important role in our environment and is something that is often overlooked in elementary education.

If I am able to teach my students not to step on every insect they see, I will have made a difference!
