Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low income and high poverty school, so my students are faced with many daily struggles. They often do not get to be just "kids" because they are faced with and focused on many adult like struggles. Often they're dealing with parental custody or divorce, family members in and out of jail, and a lot of the times homelessness. Despite the challenges that each student faces, they have a love for learning and it shines through each and every day.

I strive to have a comfortable and safe environment for my students.

My classroom is their safe haven. It is a place where a kid can be...just that a KID!

My Project

The items I have selected will be used for daily 5 centers. Daily 5 is a program that I follow. It consists of five centers that give students the choices of their own learning. The choices are reading, writing, and 3 iPad activities. Each day students choose which center they'd like to learn from and they find a place in the classroom where they feel most comfortable, rather then sitting at their desks. As students venture off to the center of their choice, I'd love for them to have something cozy to curl up on to get lost in a book and/or have them bloom into authors.

What a better way to read than to cozy up on something comfy?

If students have an option they will get to choose from beanbags, stools, and/or cushions. The items will be placed in my gathering area/library of my classroom. Students will be allowed to choose whichever type of seating and place in the classroom that best suits their needs.
