My Project

11th grade students take US history, therefore 11th grade language arts focuses on learning about diverse American experiences through literature. The novel There There by Tommy Orange is a powerful example of modern literature capturing diverse indigenous American experiences. A Pulitzer Prize Finalist for 2018, There There features incredible prose and language that are ripe for analysis with junior English students. Aside from literary analysis, this novel allows students to grapple with different perspectives on American values and opportunities, and opens the door for rich classroom discussions and writing exercises. This novel accesses the intersection between the history of Native American's historical oppression and the ongoing "plight of the urban Native American."
