Help our kids build strong foundations for reading and writing success!
I teach kindergarten in a title I school and a high-needs community.
Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch and 90% of our students come from ethnic backgrounds. We are a fine-arts magnet school seeking to integrate the arts and combine them with academics for increased learning.
My Project
Every day my students look forward to literacy centers. It's a time they get to meet with me to work on their reading and phonics skills as well as a time they get to work on their own or with a partner putting those skills into practice. My students love to work on the carpet, but lack some of the organizational tools to be able to do so effectively. I am requesting a set of student book holders so that when the children go to the carpet they know just where to find their books that they are working on at their just right level. I'm also requesting soft pillows for them to sit on while they are reading and a lapboard station to organize the lapboards, markers and erasers they use for follow up activities.
Kindergarten is the base for all learning.
Early literacy success will help the students achieve success later in their school careers. They will take with them the skills they learn here and build upon them for the rest of their lives. A good foundation is the key!
