My Students
If you walked into my classroom on any given day you would hear laughter. You would see students working together and helping one another. You would see students encouraging each other and congratulating one another on a job well done. You would see a community. It is my firm belief that learning can only happen in a safe and enjoyable environment, where everyone feels a sense of belonging. And my students are fully aware of that.
Community is the key to a successful classroom.
My students come from all walks of life. It is my job as an educator to help them find their voice, feel confident in themselves, and learn to accept differing opinions and values of others. It is my job to help my students get ready for the world ahead of them.
My Project
I strongly believe that without community, learning cannot take place. That is why I hold class meetings on a daily basis. Our meetings are what bring us together as a family and provide opportunities for us to learn from one another. While a classroom rug may not be seen as a necessity, I do believe it is important to have a comfortable spot in the classroom for students to do this work.
In my building, all the floors are tiled and only lower elementary classrooms are supplied with rugs.
Big kids deserve carpet time too. This is where the magic happens. We use our meeting area for class meetings, math and reading mini lessons, lesson debriefing, number talks, and restorative circles. It also provides an open space for students to read or work in groups. It can get uncomfortable for the students to sit on the tile floor. If you are focusing too much on your discomfort, that can make it hard to focus on anything else. This is why I would really love to be able to provide them with a more comfortable space to sit.
