Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a very low income urban area and attend a Title I school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not have computers, tablets, or internet access at home and do not have the means to obtain access to online tools that promote learning in all subject areas. Many of my students' parents are not literate which means that in most cases, the only reading and writing supports my students receive are at school. My school does not have a budget to provide supports, tools, or technology for individual classrooms.
My Project
We need to ensure our students are fully prepared not only to function in daily life, but to contribute as global citizens in the increasingly technology-driven world we live in. My students occasionally have access to a Chrome cart of 25 computers that is shared with the entire third grade and several science classes- that's over 100 students! When our school enters a testing cycle, the Chrome cart becomes inaccessible so that it can be used by the entire K-8 school in order for all 1,000 students to take standardized tests online. When we do have access to computers, my students use websites like NewsELA to access nonfiction articles written for young students, Raz-Kids for emerging readers, Khan Academy for individualized math practice, Google Classroom for writing assignments and easy access to video links, practice MCAS assessments for test prep, and typing.com for basic typing practice. It would be so beneficial to have permanent access to just six Chromebooks in our classroom so that students always have the option to work in small groups during reading, writing (typing!), and math blocks. Regular access to these websites (and so many more) will certainly enhance my students' skills in all subject areas and help them become confident in their ability to use technology to learn, communicate, and create.
