Wow! You can imagine a teachers' glee when seeing a new set of reading materials...then we realized that we wouldn't be able to use the listening libraries in our classrooms with our current cassette tape player listening centers. (sad face)
I teach at a gifted/high ability magnet in CA.
We enjoy a voluntarily multicultural/diverse population, which enhances our second grade curriculum. Sharing our various cultural backgrounds ties in with our state standards of heritage and how different people can make a difference. We have a fantastic parent organization that tries its best to raise monies to pay for Art, Music, and P.E. teachers to enrich their children's education.
My Project
My students need a listening center that uses a CD player. Our new reading series only gives us CDs for students to listen to the stories. Our school district purchased a new reading program for our elementary schools. The amount of materials is overwhelming...but fantastic for teachers...we have to many materials from which to choose to teach. Unfortunately, we don't have much hardware support (few computers in the classrooms, etc.) A basic need I have is for a CD player for a listening center, where students can listen to a (fantastic) reader retell the stories that we work on each week. [I have center time each Friday where students rotate around to various activities.] Unfortunately, these listening centers cost money that the school does not have. I have an old center, but it utilizes a cassette player, and our new materials are only Cd's.
I feel like I'm not giving my students the best education they could receive.
It's like cutting off one avenue from which they could glean even more understanding of the material I present. Plus, having the stories presented in an more fun and entertaining way will help my students look forward to the next week's stories with even more excitement.
