FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. D.'s classroom raised $563
This project is fully funded
This past year I taught a second grade inclusion (a special education/ general education) class where my students had to sit on a dingy, stained blue carpet, which was dragged up from the basement by the custodian in the beginning of the year. The carpet was old and smelly, and dilapidated. It was unraveling around the edges, and had black stains scattered about it.
Since New York City schools are required to partake in balanced literacy and the workshop model, these second grade students were forced to sit on this carpet each day, most of the time more than once a day. The students would complain about the odors and stains on the carpet and some of my distracted students would play with the lint.
I would vacuum the carpet daily, and had it steamed in the middle of the year, but nothing seemed to help. I even tried investing in a piece of cut carpet which I was able to purchase from a nearby carpet store. This carpet lasted for awhile but since it wasn't bound around the edges, this carpet also unraveled.
This year I am teaching 20 first grade students, and after reading several articles and complaints by other teachers about the dangers of carpet mites and other embedded dirts, I am afraid to have my students sit on the same dilapitated carpet as last year's students.
Please help me buy my students a carpet so that they can learn in an area that is comfortable and safe. I was looking into the nice carpets from kidcarpet.com. There is one that will reinforce the alphabet and brighten up our classroom. It is the ABC caterpillar rug and it comes in 3 sizes. I don't care which size you help me get, any one will defintely be an improvement to the carpet we have now. Please consider donating a carpet for our classroom. My students and I greatly appreciate it!
