This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The carpet in every elementary classroom provides connection and community. It is where we gather to learn and share our ideas, values, and the challenges that may arise. It is the central hub for learning and conversations in our classroom. My current carpet is well-loved and needs to be replaced. My students need an inviting environment that fosters their learning and a place where they look forward to coming into community together.

Community is one of my core values as a teacher and it’s vital for students to feel a part of the community for their learning.

We start our day on our carpet during morning meeting in a circle, so we can share with each other and see everyone. It is a special time when we learn about each other and experience joy and shared experiences.

I teach my lessons in a whole group, so it’s important that students have a place to gather. When each student has a spot, they know where to go and it reduces anxiety around where to sit. They feel ready to learn because of the consistency.

I am excited for this school year and the knowledge my scholars bring with them. The carpet will be the centerpiece of connections, learning, and growth.
