My Project
My students come from a city environment. Most of their time is spent in their homes, littered city parks, or polluted waterways. They have very little exposure to plants, animals, and our National Parks. It used to be inexpensive to camp or visit our National Parks. However, the cost of campsites, camping equipment, and park entry fees has increased. Unfortunately, many of my students' parents can't afford this. And their limited knowledge of the earth's environment around them often creates a lack of respect for Mother Nature.
Students who camp, hike, explore, and visit National Parks tend to have a healthier respect for their environment and are eager to learn more about the climate.
Since many of our students have limited or no exposure to these things, it is important for the teachers and schools to educate the students on how to care for our planet. Since I can't take my students camping in a National Park, I will bring the camping experience to them.
I will transform my room into a campsite. I will set up a tent, camping signs, a campfire ring, and an exploration center. We will read books on camping, sing the ABC song around the campfire, learn about plants & animals, play games, learn how to take care of our environment, and explore the habitat around the school. The entire lesson will also incorporate the alphabet letters and their sounds. The letter I for insects and L for ladybug are just a few examples.
I can't wait to see the look on my students' faces when they see my classroom! I know they will gravitate toward the exploration center and will be eager to learn more about this exciting adventure. I know this experience will have a positive effect on them too.
