Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Enthusiastic teacher in need of classroom set of calculators to enhance student learning. I am an 8th grade math teacher specializing in Pre-Algebra and Algebra courses at a low-income, high-need middle school that is facing another year of little-to-no money in the budget for classroom supplies.
Each year, our students come to a sub-par middle school hoping to learn necessary skills for their future. With a lack of monetary funds in our budget, I feel unable to provide them these skills. A majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch program and therefore are unable to acquire basic supplies such as paper and pencil, let alone calculators.
Throughout the school year, students are expected to apply math skills and knowledge to real-life situations. In these situations, the numbers are not as simple as 2 x 2 and require calculator use. I would like to teach students how to properly use calculators in real-life math problems. Students are given a store ad and a series of questions, including free-answer questions, where they need to figure sales totals, sales tax, discounts, etc. It is imperative they become familiar with the operation of a calculator to complete these processes.
I am a firm believer in students doing the work and not the calculator. I do not believe in students using calculators for every problem and on every day. You will make it possible for me to teach my students the correct use for calculators in everyday life, but still knowing the necessary mathematical skills.
