Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group, coming from all kinds of families, socioeconomic groups, and ethnicities . Our entire district is designated Title I, and we serve many immigrants and refugees, most of whom have family members working at a local meat packing plant.
Many of my students work after school almost every day, and many others are involved in a variety of activities including athletics, theater arts, music, visual arts, and competitive academics.
We are an AVID demonstration school, and are proud to send our graduates to colleges, universities, and other post-secondary programs all over Kansas and the US.
Our students perform at least 20 hours of community service prior to graduation, and they are supported by a staff of dedicated teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff.
I hope you will take a look at our project and help support our classroom with the supplies and equipment we need to make our classroom the best learning environment that it can be!
My Project
Chemistry students use scientific calculators for stoichiometry calculations and unit conversions.
Many students struggle to buy their own, and learning is stalled when the students cannot follow along with the calculations in class.
No cell phones allowed for test security reasons, and to maintain a good learning environment in the classroom without the distractions of a smart phone. Students also perform better when they learn the processes on the same type of technology they will use when assessed.
The caddy will allow me to keep the calculators organized and accounted for. Students will need to place a cell phone or other item in the pocket to remind them to return the calculator at the end of class.
