I teach alternative school students at a Title I public school that believes that students come first. Despite the obstacles that many of them have at home, my students try to come to school mentally prepared to learn.
When my students walk into our school and my classroom, they know that they can leave the burdens of their home and social lives at the door.
If they are hungry, we will feed them.
If they don't have clothes, we will dress them. If they don't have supplies, we will supply them. We want our students' only concern to be education, without worrying about the drugs, violence, and stress of the surrounding environment.
I believe in creating an environment where students are immersed in an experience. The classroom helps transform learning into a tangible real-world experience.
This year the theme is "FRIENDS" from the hit tv series.
As we read and analyze our history and full texts, it is important to transform my classroom walls, bulletin boards, and ambiance of the four classroom walls that alter the perception of literature by surrounding the students with representations of what they read.
The posters and wall décor will refresh my classroom in ways that inspire more reading, more critical thinking, more conversation, more debate, and more learning. This theme will set a tone as an atmosphere of conversation which will allow me to pull more conversation from them and as a teacher, show students that a new perspective in reading can be inspiring and influential.
