I read on a teaching blog that the average teacher goes through 60 pencils each month. Another blog suggested four pencils a month for each student, and a third blog for teachers said when ordering pencils for the school year, multiply the number of students by twelve.
I have never counted the pens and pencils that my students go through each month, but these numbers don't sound crazy.
Some people may argue that we should hold students accountable for not bringing supplies to class. If the student doesn't have anything to write with, then he has to endure the consequences of not being able to complete the classwork assignment on time. I disagree. I think that giving students grace sends the message that we care about them and their education. There could be any number of reasons why a student came to class unprepared - lack extra money, no ride to the store, someone borrowed it and never returned it, didn't sleep at his house last night, locker jam, etc.
Punishing or belittling a student for coming unprepared wastes instructional time and ruins relationships. Instead, like most teachers, I keep a stack of supplies in the front of my classroom for students in need. They can pick up paper, a writing utensil, and even a piece of hard candy or mint. Sometimes students with extra supplies leave them in my classroom for others to use. I love their willingness to share and help their peers.
As the school year is winding down, so are my supplies. Your donation will help to replenish my stash of paper, pens, and pencils that will, in turn, help students be prepared to learn.
