Do you remember what it was like to be in school? Everything couldn't possibly fit in that one folder that was falling apart. Or what about when you took the wrong folder home and complete your assignment. Now,Students will keep all their tests, homework and handouts all in one binder.
My students are 6th graders in an inner city school in Pennsylvania.
We are a turn around charter school that has been chronically failing for years. We have been a charter for 2 years and are making great improvements every year. 92% of the students in this school participate in the reduced or free lunch program. My students work hard and overcome many obstacles before coming to school each day. I have students from every imaginable background all just waiting for the chance to be successful. Last year students excelled in Math and went on to win 1st in the city in the Reading Olympics. Working with the students have shown me that they have a thirst for learning and only need to fine tune their habits and study skills. Many students stay after school for enrichment activities like math club, chess club and dance. Students also attend Saturday school tutoring for Math and Reading. Students attend all available sessions provided for them, which shows a high interest and a desire for learning. We need to help them succeed in every way possible.
My Project
The 6th grade students I am working with have had the misfortune of being in a failing school all but the last 2 years. Study habits and organization are areas the students most need help in after academics. Often they receive the information but do not know how to process and study it. I am implementing a new binder system this year. Each student will have a binder, in it will be all homework, classwork, handouts and tests. Students will be required to bring their binders to class everyday and take them home every night. Any communication with parents will be put in the binder. This will put all the students resources in one place and give them one thing to take home for homework each night. Parents will know to look for binders each night for homework and communication from the teacher. When a student is completing homework or projects the information or resources they need will be in the binder. This will help students organize their work. Please, help my students get binders and dividers to help them organize their classwork, homework, handouts, and tests all into this one binder. This will help the students with their organization and ultimately help them reach their goals.
Helping students become more organized in the classroom is a skill they can take with them throughout their school careers.
Resources in school are tight and often times classroom teachers are left to purchase items to make the educational process successful. Help from outside agencies helps and gives students resources they need but would not get. It takes a village to raise a child. We must work together.
