DRAMA STUDENTS in 9th and 10th grade at FORDHAM HS for the ARTS wish to attend an off-Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet at the Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre Co. in NYC:
I teach four sections of HS Drama at the Fordham HS for the Arts in the Bronx. This is an impact school, with a high percentage (95%) of economically disadvantaged students. It is my hope to take forty 9th and 10th graders to see a production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with a post-show actor talk-back, and tour of the backstage area. Most of these students have never seen live theatre, and cannot afford tickets without assistance.
The Jean Cocteau Rep Co. has established a recent partnership with FHSA. This partnership includes a discount on tickets for students, and volunteer guest artists traveling to the school prior to the show, to prepare students in scenework and dramatic style, to enhance their audience experience.
As their drama instructor, I would prepare the students for the trip by studying various versions of Romeo and Juliet with visual and written performance projects in class. The materials neccesary for the project would be tickets for each student. Transportation will be provided by the school's project arts budget.
Seeing live theatre will make dramatic literature, and Shakespeare especially, come alive for students, and give drama students a truer sense of what an actor does, as well as develop them as theatre-goers and audience members throughout their lives.
