This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a fun, safe place to learn how to play the classical guitar! I am the only music teacher at a small, progressive high school that focuses on project based instruction. My school is in a high poverty neighborhood and most of my students cannot afford to buy an instrument. I started a classical guitar program at my school last year and I was able to bring a few of my own guitars into school for my students to play. My students play guitar during the school day and some of them joined my After School Guitar Ensemble which meets once a week after school. The After School Guitar Ensemble performed last year at our Talent Show, the City-Wide Music Concert, and at our schools Graduation. Unfortunately due to lack of guitars I had to turn kids away from playing in the After School Guitar Ensemble last year. I want to give my students an outlet to express themselves and they can do that by playing the guitar.
My students are finally given a chance to learn how to play an instrument! A few years ago my district laid off a lot of music teachers. Last year they decided to bring music back into my district. The problem is that while the district has brought music back into the schools they are doing so without giving us a budget. I started this classical guitar program to give inner city students a chance to learn to play the classical guitar, something they would not be able to do outside of school. If my students had the resources they would take full advantage of this opportunity to learn this beautiful instrument.
My students cannot learn how to play the guitar without guitars! I write/arrange most of the music that my students perform, I just need to give them an instrument to perform it on! My school did not have a cohesive music program until I started working there last year so most of my students have never been given an opportunity to learn an instrument. The students who are able to play an instrument at school are extremely grateful. I would like to be able to provide every student who wants to play in the After School Guitar Ensemble a guitar to play and a positive outlet for them to express themselves. For this to happen, I am asking for a classical guitar with case, tuner, and nylon strings.
Your help will ensure that my students have the materials that they need to be successful. They already have the interest, the motivation, and the discipline to practice the instrument, they just need their dream to become a reality.
