Hello all! This year I had the opportunity to take two classes: Liljedahl's "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" (BTCM) and "Science of Reading" (SOR). These classes allowed me to implement multiple strategies that have helped my students in ELA. I am requesting a few things to help these student-led strategies be more efficient and organized. The strategies have improved my students’ testing scores over the year. My students have not only benefited from the strategies, but they have also come to enjoy learning.
The two strategies that I have focused on in my classroom are "Vertical Whiteboards" and "paragraph shrinking".
I took the strategy of "Vertical Whiteboards" from BTCM. This strategy allows students to have a vertical working space that I can monitor closely and give immediate feedback. I am not a math teacher; however, I was able to adapt this strategy to the ELA curriculum that I teach to almost 90 4th graders. In the SOR class, I learned a strategy called "Paragraph Shrinking" that helps my students extract the key details and main idea of a paragraph. Using these two strategies together my students have improved their ability to find the important information more reliably.
In the class these strategies benefit not just the day-to-day learning but testing as well. These items (headphones, markers, mice, pencils,tape, stapler, printer ink) will help my students make their learning environment their own and make the testing environment more enjoyable.
