This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are used to reading great American plays about the souls of previous generations. They read Streetcar and are thrilled and horrified by Stanley and Blanche; they read Fences and mourn for Troy. What they are not used to seeing is great American drama being written about them, about now.
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is raw, gripping, and about my students' generation.
It is about those who live in a world they are told is post-racial, but burdened with the weight of segregation and generational trauma. I will teach this play in conjunction with the 2014 Atlantic Magazine article "The Case for Reparations" by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
This book is not available through the DOE procurement systems. Please help my students hold their own history in their hands.
This is a repeat project from eight years ago. We had a class set of books, but they have been used for over eight years of backpacks, lockers, and class readings. We could use a new set.
