My Project
My students are creative, inquisitive, and full of potential. Each year, I strive to foster a love for reading and a sense of community in our classroom from day one. They Call Me Güero by David Bowles is the perfect novel to kick off our literacy journey, as it introduces students to the power of poetry, identity, and storytelling in a way that is both engaging and relatable.
A class set of this novel will allow all students to experience the joy of reading together, rather than relying on limited copies or digital versions.
Through whole-group discussions, students will analyze themes, explore literary devices, and connect the story to their own lives. This novel’s unique verse format will also help students build confidence in reading while making literacy accessible for all learners.
My goal for this project is to set the tone for a year filled with meaningful reading experiences. By beginning with a diverse and powerful novel, I hope to show my students that stories can reflect their own experiences while also introducing them to new perspectives. Your support will help create a classroom where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired to become lifelong readers.
