My Students
I have been working hard all year to expose my students to a variety of books and get them excited about reading. So far this year we have read and enjoyed great books like Touching Spirit Bear. I'm looking for one more to close out the year.
My school is located in Washington Park on the South Side of Chicago.
My 7th graders are curious and insightful learners, and I continuously look for ways to spark their interest and engage them in critical ways. Many of my students experience various challenges in and out of school but one thing I have consistently emphasized with them is what they think matters and their knowledge is valued in my classroom.
My Project
I am looking for one more book to close out the school year. My students spend time reading every single day, and I have built their reading stamina up to where they can read for up to 30 minutes uninterrupted. We will use this book in many ways--to read and enjoy, to practice comprehension strategies, and we will also engage in greater inquiry around Hurricane Katrina and the breaking of the levees as well as learn more about the history and culture of the people of New Orleans. I will use other materials outside of this novel but the book will be the focal text of our final unit. The book is an engaging and well-written story that I think my students will enjoy.
Many of my students have never read an entire chapter book prior to coming to my classroom.
My 7th grade students, with your help, will be able to say they read 4 books this year (plus others they have chosen on their own). Reading a shared text allows us to have rich discussions and deep engagement in a topic that is relevant and interesting.
