This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach fourth grade at a school with primarily refugees from Burma, Africa, and Somalia. If they are not a refugee, they are a second language learner. 100% of my students live in poverty.
My students love school!
It is an escape from their difficult home lives. They especially love being read to. When I read them a book, they are so much more interested and engaged when they have their own copy of the book. They can help me read certain parts, and they can actually see the words on the page and hear fluent reading. This helps them as readers in so many ways.
My Project
The book that I am requesting has so many good discussion points I cannot wait to read it with them. It is about a boy that was born with a deformed face and he gets bullied in school. With so much bullying going on today, I think this book would really help them see the perspective of the student that is getting bullied.
My project is important to help my students become fluent readers and incredible human beings.
They will witness and participate in the reading and also participate in important discussions around an important topic of today.
