My Students
The best part of being a teacher in a small school is that you get to know your students--very well. With this kind of relationship, you can push them so much farther than in a big school setting. Your expectations of them, and their goals for themselves, are known and celebrated by the entire school. The bond we create with our students here are the bonds that last a lifetime. At our school, we not only learn together we laugh, love, cry, and grow as humans together.
Last year when I started, I found the kids thrived on combining English and History.
The best way to do this is to have a book study and use the text to teach aspects of English while immersed in the story and the history behind it. We have sets of books here already, but I would like to grow our collection so that I can carry units across grade levels. To do this, I need more books at varying levels. The students here are so excited for the next step and with your help, together we can get them the books they so desire.
My Project
Last year I inadvertently started a fire within my students that I don't ever want to see go out. We started with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. My eighth grade students fell in love with learning all they could about WWII and have improved not only the knowledge of history but aspects in English as well. The interest and response while using this topic has been amazing. They are eagerly awaiting the next step of broadening their minds and understanding their world. I feel this book, with it's first hand accounts, will broaden their understanding even further.
