This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Until they became conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”
― George Orwell, 1984
I regularly remind my students that they need to be conscious of the challenges outside of their high school bubble, if they want to actively make a change.
My students are complicated, sensitive, creative young adults, whose interests span from science and technology to art and philosophy.
They are learning to look at the world through a variety of lenses and identify where it is they fit. Our students are diverse, critical thinkers, who challenge themselves to dig deeper and ask difficult questions.
My Project
Through reading, 1984, my students will have a more defined approach in answering the following question-
Do individuals have the power to change the society in which they live?
This novel carries us through the junior experience, and is the anchor novel through which our story is told. This novel allows them to ask our students challenging questions about individuality, privacy, government, ethics and history.
Our school is a school founded on innovation, rigor and progressive educational practices; however, much of our school population falls into the Title 1 category.
Students often have difficulty purchasing copies of books, and we do not have a school library or class sets of most of the novels we read. My hope is to help students access copies of all of our junior year novels without financial stress.
