My Students
I have the privilege of being a kindergarten teacher this year. I am very excited at the opportunity to give my students an exciting and enriching first year of school. My prior experience as a 1st grade teacher will be a huge assist in helping these new learners have a successful year.
My very young students have a variety of interests, experiences, as well as different levels of prior knowledge and skill.
We are an elementary school with a high level of poverty, in addition to being in a military town. Our students need a sense of structure and unconditional love/support because most of them do not get it from their home life.
My Project
The morning meeting that we have each day allows the students to not only learn about the days of the week, months of the year etc. but it give the children an opportunity to share what is on their mind. I feel this family style meeting helps create a safe and friendly environment for the classroom. I’m asking for a large rug in the classroom that has letters on them, so I can use it as a teaching aid, in addition to its function as a comfortable floor covering for the children to sit.
I believe sitting together for a ‘meeting’ or to have story/play time on a large carpet helps establish a family environment.
The majority of my children do not experience this sense of togetherness/structure due to low income, military deployments or family struggles. I feel my students can become better learners when their classroom is a safe haven and a place they want to come to everyday.
