Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school with limited resources, and students live in an underserved community.

The typical students I serve are low income and a first-generation students.

Students have a mix of Latino and African American backgrounds. They carry with them strong cultural ties and great diversity, yet opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.

I work mostly with 11th and 12th graders helping expose them to college, financial aid, scholarships, and sometimes just figuring out what comes after high school. I also work to create a culture in the school that encourages students to believe they can attend, afford and succeed in college.

My Project

For Decision Day, we will have students walk a red carpet, announce to their peers the post-secondary plans, have a photo booth set up and music playing. Students will also be able to enter a raffle for prizes, such as a Chromebooks, a school supply kit that includes notebooks, pens and highlighters. These are tools that every student needs in order to be successful in college.

Some of my students will be the first in their family to attend a 4-year college, or college at all.

We want to encourage students to continue their education after high school and help them in their next chapter of their educational careers. Decision Day will be a celebration of all of their accomplishments so far and what they will achieve in the future.
