My Students

This classroom is full of eager, hard working students who are excited to learn how to read. These students are driven and they are eager to participate in our class community and discussions. This is a diverse group of students from all backgrounds who enjoy participating in projects, discussions and stories. There are young leaders, artists, and engineers.

There are twenty-five, dyslexic students in my classroom who love learning and stories, but reading is hard work for them and requires intense, dedicated focus.

Reading does not come easy for these students. It takes time, energy and focus to read. It is hard work for them to ready quickly and automatically, but they will learn how to read. However, these students still love to learn, and they want to read and gain information and enjoyment from information about the world around them.

My Project

These books and carpet will make the classroom library an inviting and exciting place to discover the enjoyment of reading. We have a dedicated, ninety minute, structured language arts block to focus on reading. Within that block everyday, we have twenty minutes of dedicated reading time in which our small groups of reading students read out loud to themselves in order to build their reading skill. These books will let them choose a book to read that they can continue into the next days. The more they read and are exposed to, the more they will improve.

The variety of books in these packs and dedicated space on the carpet will maintain students' interest in reading to themselves and each other.

On the carpet, they'll be able to sit comfortably alone or in groups to explore our world of language in books. Dyslexia makes reading hard, so it is important to encourage these students to engage with as much text as possible. My goal is to make it fun and interesting while they gain strength and accuracy in reading!
