My Students

This year I have the privilege to teach 28 amazing 6th graders in Richmond, California. As most of us can recall from our own experience, 6th grade is a very pivotal time for emotional, social and academic development. What may not be as relatable are the social inequities that make this development much more challenging for the students in my classroom. Like their surrounding community, RSD schools are significantly underfunded. This lack of financial resources makes it difficult to provide students with the tools they need to succeed.

Committed to the success of my students, I am determined to create a safe classroom that encourages students to be themselves and celebrates their unique interests, lifestyles and ways of learning.

I am excited to see this space serve my students as we learn and grow as a 6th grade team.

My Project

After my students took a reading assessment in the beginning of the year, I learned that 27 of the 28 pupils read below a 6th grade level. This not only makes 6th grade English Language Arts challenging, but also other subjects that require grade level reading (e.g. math, science, and history). Research shows that a huge factor that can turn these results around is increasing the amount of time students spend leisurely reading. Unfortunately, due to limited funds, students lack access to books that engage them and make reading enjoyable.

By creating a comfortable and culturally relevant classroom library, I hope to open my students eyes to the joys of reading.

After surveying the class and doing 6th grade literature research, I have carefully chosen a collection of books that align with student interests and cultural backgrounds. Once having access to new books the carpet, bookshelf, and bean bags will complete this space and make it a safe and relaxing area to read and grow.

The classroom library will play a huge rule in the reading and academic development of my students. I can't wait to see this space and the excited faces that will frequent it.
