My Students

My classroom is a warm and welcoming home to my students. We are Minion crazy and have them everywhere. We also have a fish tank! I want my students to end the year being happy with all that they have accomplished and eager to start fifth grade.

I have a multicultural classroom of students who are learning English as a second language.

They come from all over the world: Africa, Nepal and Central and South America. The school is very large and in an urban district where funding is limited. Testing is a high priority, but I try to de-emphasize that and focus on making school enjoyable and learning fun.

My Project

Reading can be a struggle so having books that start at a lower level is helpful. My classroom library is limited, and the books are getting worn. The students will be very excited to have new books. I want to inspire the students to want to read any way that I can. Most say that they don't enjoy reading, but I think that it is because it is still such a struggle. I remind them that the more the practice, the easier it will become. I would like to create life-long readers out of the most cynical.

This project will help give the students a wider variety of books to choose from to read.

The additional books will give them a broader knowledge base in which to make connections to the world around them that they haven't even experienced yet. These children have very limited experiences and don't understand many references that you and I take for granted. This will help provide some of that.
