As a teacher of students in a low income/single-parent family homes, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The students in my classroom like to move; they love to read and love lots of positive attention.
Many are students with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbance, and specific learning disability. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Throughout my teaching career I have always had a fish tank in my classroom. The students in my class Love it!
They will often spend time watching the fish during transition times and quiet time in the classroom.
Unfortunately the goldfish we have in the classroom, George, is out growing his current tank. We need a 29 gallon aquarium kit, a new filter, and a replacement filter for the future. This will give George a tank with more room to swim around and the tank will be bigger allowing more of our students to stand around the tank and watch the fish.
Keeping George alive will provide many experiences in the classroom. The students take on more responsibilities helping feed him and take care of him and he is used as inspiration for drawing and writing activities throughout the day.
