Class Computer and Critter Cam

My Students

How can we ask students to care for the environment when they don't even know what animals exist in our midst? The human animal has an amazing capacity for knowledge but knowledge begins with experience. Nature walks are great but we want coyotes not just coyote scat!

My students are lively and energetic.

They love to learn about the natural world through direct experience. Our school is tucked right up against a large state park and so we are lucky in that wildlife often wanders onto campus. Unfortunately when we go out during the day it is too hot for the animals and they are all resting and hiding. I want to really connect the students to the nature surrounding them so that they will have a vested interest in protecting wildlife. Sadly the technology in our school is not up to date and we do not have class computers. When students create digital presentations they often must bring in their own laptops and this creates potential inequalities as not all students have access to computers at home.

My Project

I am requesting a laptop, wildlife camera and locking mechanism for my students. My students will set up the game camera in different locations to record the various denizen of the night. They will then use the photos to create presentations which they will give to the rest of the class. The camera is the fun and exiting tool but the computer is vital. As it stands there is only one outdated desktop in my classroom and it is only possible to continue to do class computer driven presentations with a newer updated computer.

Pictures in a book can be powerful but in today's world there is so much competing for the attention of our youth that we need to liven things up a bit.

Giving students the chance to record and report directly on the wild animals in our midst is one way to up the ante. If students are excited they will work harder and remember forever the lessons they have learned.
