Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in an urban area and come from low-income households. Many of them have not had the opportunity to get out of the city and experience nature. These students are about to graduate in June and they will be going off to college after spending high school, and many of them grade school, together in our small school environment.

My students, a closeknit class of graduating seniors, are hoping for a lasting memory together to bond and experience the outdoors together, something they have never had the opportunity to do as a group.

My Project

This trip is all about community building and teaching students about the value of supporting each other even in challenging new environments. This group of students is already close, but they are about to graduate and embark on new adventures in college. One of the unique features of our school is that we are a small community, and you will often hear that we are like family, which is true. This class will continue to support one another in college, and so this last trip together is one last chance for them to bond before graduation and remember why they need to be there for each other even after graduation. This support network that they are building will help ensure their future success. On the trip, they will complete ropes courses and enjoy nature together, something that many of them have never done and that they certainly have not done together.
