My Students

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The FUTURE belongs to those who BELIEVE in their DREAMS." Teaching at a school where we raise funds for our projects is quite a challenge and lack of resources get in the way at times. Using models a lot esp for 5th graders solidify their understanding of a concept learned.

As a 5th grade Science educator, I have been teaching 7 years now serving and teaching inner-city children.

When our students come to our school in 5th grade, most of them have not learned the BASIC concepts in science that they should have learned from their former school. As a teacher, I bridged the HUGE gap by teaching our students what they missed from 1st through 4th grade considering that they will be tested by the state in such a short time. The time is now for them to really have a strong science foundation and ground them in this field that is so neglected by many. Upon learning all the concepts and beyond that my students learned, they are at grade level and even higher. Their love for science is highly evident and impacted at the end of the year that they wanted also to become a science teacher or a scientists someday. These students CAN achieve.

My Project

Using models in the class and learning Science in the Sky concepts will truly change and strengthen the students' understanding of basic concepts tied to this unit. Concrete objects used and by the students manipulating them and talking about them with their partners or groups will help a lot and concretize the concepts of the order of the planets and the information and characteristics of the planets, phases of the moon, understanding seasons, tides and weather. This would tie up with space travel where students led to careers in science in this field. Having a solid foundation of all these, it prepares my students to have a deeper knowledge and understanding of basic concepts and have them ready for state testing and also lead my students to pursue careers that will impact and change their own world (teaching the CORRECT concepts to their peers or even siblings) and in a global perspective. They become the "change we want to see in this world" as Gandhi puts it.

Meaningfully learning Science-in-the-Sky concepts and MAKING CONNECTIONS of these in real life and the real world, like what is happening around the students (what they witness happen around them and in the media) will capture the value of appreciating the phenomenon that occur every single day and how it probably impact the future.

Much more, having the students get involved in the future will impact change in our world.
