This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a middle school music teacher in an inner-city school, and I teach students from 6th to 8th grade. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background in an area infected with gangs and drugs. Many of my students, mostly poor, tell me that music class is the reason they stay in school.
I have been making progress, but I am still a long way away from having all of my students on working instruments.
We are in need of clarinets. Currently, I have students with bad clarinets, and this makes it difficult when playing their instrument.
My Project
Our band program is in need of 3 clarinets. Giving a child the responsibility of maintaining and practicing their own clarinet not only allows them to improve their technique but it teaches them about responsibility and discipline. Our band program is a big thrill as well as a wonderful team building activity for a group. It also shows the community, and the neighborhood what our students are capable of doing.
I want to give my students the best musical experience possible, and the addition of another good working clarinet to my inventory will complete the band section.
It will get another inner city student making music.
