My Students

The fifth grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.

We strive to have students experience historical empathy through social studies simulations.

Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling. The fifth graders of Livingston, Montana value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.

My Project

This request is being submitted for the “Hall of Heroes” project in 5th grade. This is a well-loved rite-of-passage that is a culmination of social studies, fine arts, language arts, reading, and writing each year. To continue our rich curriculum, we paint our stage on extra large canvas. This will be LARGEST canvas they have ever painted at 48" x 48"! We are requesting corrugated sheets to use as a canvas for this project.

After a year-long study of our history from the Civil War to Modern Day Civil Rights, students select a historic figure to represent in the "Hall of Heroes" wax museum.

First, they research and write a biography about their selected person. Next, students paint a meaningful, era specific painting on a giant corrugated sheet of cardboard. They dress in costume as their figure and stand like a wax statue in-front of their painting. Their corrugated cardboard canvases sit upon easels for the performance, and then the students take them home and hang them in their room where they stay for years. I know because my son was Jackie Robinson the year he was in fifth grade. He is now a junior in high school, and we still have his painting!

This project is truly a rite-of-passage. Students honor another human being by researching, writing, painting, and embodying them. The musical timeline that serves as the opening to the public has brought forth community tears of joy and nostalgia. Students pose as wax figures dressed as their historical hero in front of their backdrops. This project not only embodies the heroes of students, but it embodies the true purpose of the fifth grade total experience.
