Civil War to Civil Rights: Pivotal Points in American History

My students need to learn about their country's history, including how to think critically, to have civil conversations, and to disseminate information.

My Students

Our school is a K-8 of approximately 200 students. These students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, both culturally and socio-economically.

Part of our school philosophy is to create an environment where students will become Lifelong Learners.

With this end goal in mind, we do our best to bring the learning experience alive for our students. Many of our families are involved, and volunteer as much as they are able.

In our middle school classroom we run a "theme-based" curriculum, which means for a 6 week period of time, our students are immersed in a subject - reading literature books, producing multimedia projects, taking study trips, learning math & science, and a variety of other hands-on experiencing- all related to the subject they are studying. Students often find new passions with this format, and go on to teach others what they have learned. We very rarely hear "I am bored", and often have past students come back to visit.

My Project

This spring, our 7-8th grades students will be immersed for 7 weeks in American History, with special attention given to the Civil War and to the Civil Rights Movement. During this time, students will create multi-media projects, have debates, write essays, and produce an artifact museum for the school.

These particular books contains literature which "challenges the students, promotes critical thinking, and encourages independent exploration." The requested titles, Free At Last and A House Divided, will be made available through student books, teacher guide, and discussion guide.

Some other skills included are comparing/contrasting, summarizing, and analyzing.

We will be able to use these books this school year, and for many years to come. Thank you for considering supporting our project.
