My Students

Many students are unaware of the struggles people of color have had to endure in the United States. I want to raise awareness of the plight Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, Japanese Americans, and African-Americans have experienced in our country.

My third grade students live in a poverty stricken neighborhood.

Many students live in a one-parent family, or live with their grandparents. Over 75% of my class qualifies for free or reduced lunch. However, despite these factors, my students are motivated to learn! We are combining the students' desire to learn with our commitment to exemplary instruction, and expect high student achievement across all subject areas. They work diligently on class assignments, collaborate, and help each other.

My Project

The Civil Rights Walk of Fame was inspired by several exhibits at the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The students will engage in a multidisciplinary Civil Rights unit of study. Students will research four different events in American History: the Trail of Tears, Japanese Interment Camps, Civil Rights Movement, and Migrant Farm Workers. Students will compare and contrast these events and create multimedia and art projects to display their knowledge. The projects will be shared with our school, family, and community.

The 3rd grade team is committed to improving student achievement.

We have strategically designed learning experiences in which students are active participants. The classroom teachers, librarian, and music teacher are collaborating. The increased rigor and relevance, high standards of achievement, and the incorporation of technological tools, art, and music will give rise to a positive learning environment in which all students are motivated to learn and perform to their full capabilities.
