Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What does civil rights mean to you? If you are an adult, you will most likely start spouting names like Gloria Steinman and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or maybe Cesar Chavez. But, if you are 16, and attend a Chicago Public High School, you could care less about those old geezers.

I teach on the southeast side of Chicago.

My students are energetic, talented, but not really academically motivated, and, like all students in this nation, must relate to the subject at hand, or their cell phone texting is the priority. But, I am a teacher, and, know that one of the most important topics they must learn during their four years in high school is civil rights. Unless they realize their rights, and how they can access our system to claim those rights, they will never advance from their current situation to one which would offer them more options. But, to hook them, I must meet them on their level, today's civil rights.

My Project

Technically a teacher, most of my duties include what is called "case management." I assist in the coordination of the annual IEP meetings for students who have what we call special needs. What is the best part of my job is the in and out of teachers and students, interested in accessing resources that are not provided by my school system, whose only focus on the outside is test scores, but, in reality, puts dollars and cents before all else. So, what if I was able to have these resources for the 15 teachers who come in and out and the 200+ students who eventually enter my door?

This project requests a laptop to research current civil rights issues, such as gay marriage and immigration reform, and will "hook" students.

Also, this project contains social science Scholastic mags, which contain issues that further "hook" students on current events, always a great connection to civil rights. Finally, paper for written expression, markers, colored pencils, and other such materials in this grant will expand my students' understanding of their own civil liberties.
