My Students
Our elementary is a suburban school with a mixed demographic. Approximately 25% of students come from a low-income family. Many students live in apartments, or in single parent homes and blended families. Two of the students have a parent in prison, and one has a deceased father. The average test scores for language arts are only 60%. Low-test score concerns have caused a big push to increase reading fluency and comprehension.
I want to introduce my students to the love of reading by using genres that teach diversity.
Using 6th grade level books, I make reading fun by having weekly Book Club meetings! We eat lunch together, I provide a treat, and we talk books! I love how much the students enjoy the Book Club and how excited they get about reading!
This year we have a hybrid schedule and the students will only come to school four days per week starting int he end of September. The students need access to books they can take home to read the books during the remote days. Your donation will help promote literacy in our school. Thank you for helping us!
My Project
I want to purchase a class set of books of called, "I am Malala" to teach my students about social injustice, and activism. Malala is a compelling, inspiring, and uplifting story about the desire a young girl had to get an education. Her desire to be educated almost cost her, her life! I want my students to read her story to get a better understanding and appreciation for diversity, culture, how some students in the world have a lack of the freedoms that we enjoy in the U.S., and to learn more about activism.
In this election year, my students need to understand why it is important to vote, be civically minded, and to keep our democracy!
They will learn this by reading Malala's true story. This book is phenomenal for teaching civics on an elementary school level, that is easy to comprehend for students, and interesting to read.
In the 6th Grade we learn about Ancient World civilizations, and current day government systems in the world. The best way to teach about social injustices in the world is for my students to learn about them firsthand. This book is a fabulous teaching tool, and it highlights the need for every student to become educated.
I want to provide literature of different diversities that teach civic mindedness through compassion, and real-life examples. I want my students to discover through the example of Malala, that one person can make a change and become an activist, no matter how old you are! I am grateful for all the help I can get with this project!
