This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walk into our classroom and you will see and hear students preparing for college level discourse and writing. Historically, our students and community have not had access to college level high school courses and that is what we are trying to change.

My students come from some of the most crime and drug infested neighborhoods in California.

Many of them walk daily from the largest projects west of the Mississippi and have attended schools that embody the crisis facing American education. They face trauma and hardships that exemplify the disconnect between poor urban communities and the American dream. Despite this, my students are some of the best and brightest in the world. Our students understand that education is the key to not only escaping their hardships but returning to their communities and improving them for generations to come. School for our students, however, is more than education, it is a safe zone. It is a place where they go to get away from the problems that plague the community and the place, which gives them hope for a better tomorrow.

My Project

As we continue to rebuild and develop our AP Government program, supplemental test prep materials are essential. Our students currently only have access to 14 year old government textbooks and random tattered test booklets. I am requesting copies of several AP Government Test prep books and hands-on manipulatives including Kaplan AP U.S. Government & Politics, Barron's AP U.S. Government and Politics Flash Cards, Cracking the AP U.S. Government & Politics Exam, 5 Steps to a 5 AP U.S. Government & Politics Flashcards, Barron's AP U.S. Government and Politics and CliffsNotes AP U.S. Government and Politics. With these books and flashcards, our students will have updated access to current material and testing strategies that will help us create a well rounded approach to a college level government course. As we strive to define and analyze government and citizenship, these resources will concurrently help our students develop necessary critical thinking and test taking skills that will carry them to the next level.

A donation to this project is equivalent to a book in the hands of my students.

These resources will help continue the development of a college ready environment. These books will help us get our students to the next level and have success on the AP examination. Our students and our community deserve updated content and test taking strategies, not government texts from the late 90's. Your contributions will help bring our AP government program into the modern era.
